Everything You Need to Know
(Before Your First Step)
We know that walking into a dance studio for the first time can feel like a big leap. At Step Out Ballroom, we’re here to make sure it feels like a natural one. Whether you’re preparing for a wedding, looking for a new way to unplug, or just want to feel more confident on the social floor, we’ve gathered the answers to our most common questions right here. Our goal is to get you moving, connected, and having fun from your very first visit.
Starting Out
I have two left feet. Can I really learn this?
Absolutely. We specialize in starting from scratch! Our Intro Level is designed specifically for people with zero dance experience. We break everything down into simple rhythms and patterns so you can feel confident from your very first lesson. If you can walk, you can dance.
Do I need to bring a partner?
Not at all! While many couples enjoy dancing together, plenty of our students come solo. In our group classes, we frequently rotate partners, which is the best way to learn lead-and-follow skills and meet the Step Out community.
What should I wear? Do I need special shoes?
Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and allows you to move freely! For shoes, we recommend something with a smooth sole (leather or smooth plastic) that allows you to turn easily. Since our studio floor is a specialized surface, you don’t need professional ballroom shoes, just avoid heavy rubber soles that might "grip" the floor too much.
How do the levels work?
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all dancing. We utilize The Step Out Method, our signature four-stage progression designed to take you from your very first beat to total mastery of the floor.
Unlike traditional rigid curriculums, this method is built around Real Connection. We break down the "language" of dance into logical, achievable steps, focusing first on rhythm, then partnership, and finally the artistry that makes you a standout social dancer. Whether you're here to unplug for an hour or want to master every dance in the book, The Step Out Method gives you a clear, confident way to get there.
-
Intro: The basics of rhythm and pattern.
-
Level 1: Focus on connection and partnership.
-
Level 2: Adding body motion and style.
-
Level 3: Where your creativity flows.
-
Level 4 (The Step Out Standard): Mastery of eight or more dances.
How do I know where I fit in The Step Out Method?
If you’ve never danced before (or it’s been a very long time!), our Intro Level is the perfect place to start. We start from absolute scratch with rhythm and basic patterns.
If you’ve danced elsewhere or are returning to the floor, we recommend starting with our Level 1 (The Connected Step). This ensures you're familiar with the Step Out style of lead-and-follow before moving into more advanced styling.
Not sure? Every dancer is unique! If you’re caught between levels, come chat with an instructor at our next Social Dance. (Every 3rd Friday of the month!) We can help you find the "Step" that feels challenging but comfortable for you.
